In the recent Health of a nation survey “Mental health is an emerging patient health issue that is causing the most concern for the future “ -49% of GPs agreed.
From the same study GPs report that psychological issues are in their top 3 reasons for patient presentations. It has risen from 61% in 2017 to 71% in 2022.
Despite such high prevalence, GP registrar training and ongoing GP CPD often does not include simple and practical strategies that can be used in session when providing care for an emotionally distressed patient.

This session will explore the neuroscience behind why and how emotional distress presents and use experiential exercises to help clinicians feel more confident help a patient move back into their window of tolerance.

Learning objectives: participants will be able to:
1. Practice and feel confident to facilitate microskills for self-soothing and co-regulation of distress as part of everyday clinical practice
2. Understand the underlying neuroscience and physiology of distress
3. Integrate understanding of the trauma-informed concept of ‘window of tolerance’ into their practice
